Real Sports Bloggers 2.0

Written by demonicume on January 27, 2008 – 2:39 pm

So it’s coming up a year that i cobbled this place together and I must say that i’m extremely pleased with how its going. All of my personal sports blogging faves blog here. We even have a few guys who auto-blog here like Dudski and *cough* Kenrick.

I’ve steadily been hacking changes into our lil site. Some of them have been great while others have broken the blogs. I know everyone liked the admin bar, but it just ate up too much bandwidth. Whenever there were more than 10 people viewing the site, we’d get the ‘THIS ACCOUNT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED’ line. I figured it was one of my other projects, but no… it was that damn admin bar. Soon as I figure out how to decrease it’s resource usage, it’ll come back. Some other things:

Real Sports Bloggers Network - We have the ability to fold other sports blogs into our community. That means that if you know someone with a kick-ass sports blogs (which uses the wordpress blogging platform (like Josh Q. Public or MeanDovine)), and that someone can now move their blog to our site and retain their domain. Whoa Curt, slow down. What I mean is:

You can buy domain for cheap (like $10 or something) and your blog will become www.myblog.com. What that means for you independent sports bloggers is that you’ll have a blog that - for all outward appearances - is an individual sports blog. no realsportbloggers in your URL. All you. ON THE BACKSIDE ==> you’ll still have our backend and it’ll be on our network. You get the benefits of not having to maintain and admin your own site, which is a huge reason many sports blogs fail. You get the free admin’ing from me, FP and Miracle, but you get to keep your own blog. All I ask is that you display a tag showing that our a part of the RSB sports blogging network.

The same goes for us RSBs: it means you can have your own sports blog, without the realsportsbloggers.com/ in your URL. You’ll still be a part of the community.

RSBN Radio - Pig has taken the lead on this project. It involves a vpn, a server under his bed, a bg of rice, a paper plate, a wooden spork and some tape. I’m not sure what the hell’s going on, but from what I read, Pig is on it. I wanna thank everyone for lending support. Once this is up and running, it will grow our site even more. It’ll be the first radio station created and run by regualar sports bloggers.

To that end, I’m looking to upgrade our hosting. To be honest, the only reason I know it’s our anniversary is because it’s time to reup our hosting plan. No worries, I ain’t suggesting that anyone donate anything - I wouldn’t accept, anyways. But I think it’s time to upgrade our hosting plan to a dedicated box, or atleast a virtual dedicated box. Right now we share a server with a few other people. That means, I have to spend most of my time trimming down applications and bitch slapping spammers who hog our bandwidth with spam. If we get onto a dedicated server, we can run our radio station from it and whole bunch of other shit I haven’t even thought of yet. Problem is you don’t want me learning to admin a VPS with our site.

Blogging for Profit
SO, we’ll continue on with the shared hosting. Once I feel comfortable enough to go live with the VPS, we’ll make the move over. Then we’ll go live with RSBN radio. Then we’ll start the domain mapping project. Trust me, if you only pop on to the radio for 2 minutes a week promoting your blog, you’ll draw more readers. We’re already getting nearly 1k hits a day, this will only push it up. The sky is the limit here.

So, that’s all I can think right now. Thanks for blogging and keep it up.

    Hey mofos…

I’m actually configuring a box at home to test the software that I hacked from Mercora. It’s a unix box but once I have it running the way it should be running, we’ll connect it through that VPN and we’ll be up and running with radio. TIMEFRAME? Well, if I didn’t have a job, I’d say within the month…but I have to fucking go to work…GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!
(that was in my best Napolean Dynomite immitation).

Hey guys…how hard would it be for us to set up a friendly fantasy league on our site? Just curious because I want to see if there are “quick-fix” ways to draw people in. The hits are outstanding, and the more options the site has the better. Who knows when the radio side will be put up.

If we put our heads together I think we can set up a fantasy league that is unique and different from what is being offered. Certain bloggers can do fantasy reviews.

I was also thinking of having a section where people can compete for “video of the week”. They send a link of their favorite video and they have a chance to win something. We get a sponsor for that section and it opens options.

    I’m thinking guys, I’m thinking…

I wondered what happened to the admin bar, no problem I figured out other ways to get to the dashboard. It was nice, but like a fried twinkie it was causing to much trouble.

Funny Dan should mention fantasy leagues, that was on my to do list along with other things that I’ve been procrastonating about. I’m sure there is something out there in WP land we could use or build upon to make our own Female Fantasy Golf league, but like everything else jobs get in the way of what we’d really like to be doing.

Do we need to go in together to invest in a decent server? Like I had stated in an email I have a GX240 that’s collecting dust that I’ll gladly donate for the greater good. Or if I need to get my hands on something with a bit more HP……

Did some googling on possible Fantasy Sports stuff for our site, lots of garbage about strategies and how to be the best Commish.

One interesting site proposes that you can manage all of your fantasy teams from their site. Be it yahoo or fux, and I also found a widget but I’m not positive that it’s compatible with WP.
    Website: http://screamingsports.com/default.aspx#

    Widget:
    http://www.widgetbox.com/tag/fantasy+sports

If we couldn’t find a suitable Fantasy Sports package at least we could offer a portal where folks could blog and manage all of their fantasy teams.
    I’ll do some more searching.

I say the blogiversary calls for a celebration. Whatever day that happens to be, everyone fill up a water bottle with Zima and take it to work. That smooth refreshing taste washes down a breakfast burrito like nobody’s business.

I think we should have a Fantasy Celebrity Rehab League. I’m drafting Lohan 1st, she averages 3 rehab stints per season. Not too shabby.

I for one am looking forward to all of the upcoming projects. It’s almost as exciting as seeing Hally Berry naked. But now that she’s pregnant I guess I’ll have to look elsewhere for that sort of excitement ?
Anyway keep up the good work !

I’ll be welcomed to make ‘The Babe Of The Day , week or month my customary project for the forum.
And as usual there’ll also be my own whimsical and serious take on various topics. As for the overall content (Babe Of The Week) matter that’ll be up to you guys to decide if it’s palatable.
