An Exercise in Futility
Written by flyingpig on December 18, 2008 – 12:13 pmSometimes it is difficult to be a sports fan. In fact, there are times that our teams dare us to walk away and leave them like a wife who has put on 70 pounds of blubber, spends all our money and never showers. We’re left wondering what happened to the torrid love affair that led us down the aisle to vow our undying love. We couldn’t wait to get past the party and back to that Honeymoon Suite with the chocolate mints on the pillows, complimentary campaign and a sunken jacuzzi with a mirror on the ceiling. We were chubby and didn’t need the Boston Medical Group to intervene on our behalf. You know what I mean.
Here in the Detroit area, we are blessed with teams that have given us excitement, championships and legends. We are home to the four major sports and the mid-point for two Big Ten Colleges who divide us Michiganders like our own version of the Mason-Dixon Line. Yeah…Spartan fans are the Southerners.
I know that we all yarn poetically about our teams and how they have brought us much more heartache and disappointment than joy, celebration and jubilation. In my 47 years on this planet while inhabiting this earthly vessel, I have experienced the thrill of TWO Detroit Tigers World Series Championships, FOUR Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup Championships, Three Detroit Pistons NBA Championships, Football, Hockey, Basketball and Baseball National Championships with the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.
What is missing from my list you may ask? Some would say that I am a bit spoiled because my teams have represented our region respectfully. Some might say that they have never experienced their team winning a major championship and that I should just shut my fucking pie hole about it right now.
Our beloved Detroit Lions are on the brink of becoming the poster child for losing. The entire Detroit Lions Organization looks our the windows from their offices at Ford Field and invite us to “EMBRACE THE SUCK” that they have provided for so many years. Our football team has been blacked out for television broadcast three times this season because fans have finally accepted what we have become.
This Sunday, the Lions will welcome in the best passing quarterback in the NFL in Drew Brees while they attempt to slow him with the worst pass defense EVER. Please tune in as Detroit corners Leigh (he spells his name like a girl and plays like one too) Bodden and Travis Fisher give Saints receivers about 15 yards of cushion so not to give up any BIG PLAYS!!! Tune in as Mike Bell and Deuce McCallister both rush for over 100 yards against the worst rush defense in the league.
You know what I find funny? Not funny HA-HA but funny peculiar. The Detroit Lions Defense under Donnie Henderson last year was ranked 19th overall. Nothing great and certainly nothing to brag about. What’s funny is that head coach Rod Marinelli fired Henderson and hired his son-in-law Joe Berry away from Tampa Bay.
How does it shake out now that Donnie Henderson was given the boot? Well let’s take a little peek. The Detroit Lions Defense could break the all time points allowed record. They have given up 444 points in 14 games for an average of 31.7 points. They have allowed a combined 5,454 yards and only the Kansas City Chiefs have given up more yards (5,459) but at least they have won a game.
How about our Offensive Line which has given up 49 sacks of our revolving door of quarterbacks. Only the Bengals and 49ers have given up more sacks (50) but once again…THEY’VE WON A GAME!!! Who is the Offensive Line Coach? Well, it is Mike Berry. Father of Joe Berry who is the son-in-law of Rod Marinelli. Well isn’t that fucking cozy? So instead of hiring coaches who knew what the hell they were doing, Rod just wanted to carry his family around with him and make sure they stayed game-fully employed until his ass gets fired in a few weeks.
Waiting on History:
I know the saying and the belief “on any given Sunday” originate from very wise men who experienced a David and Goliath moment at some point in their life. Believe me when I say, there will be NO given Sunday nor a Detroit David beating up on a New Orleans or Green Bay Goliath this year. It is over. Mail it in. Put a fork in it because it is DONE!!!
No team in the HISTORY of the NFL has lost 16 games in a season until our lowly and pathetic Detroit Lions accomplish that feat in 10 days. You will all be home getting over the food and presents from Christmas and you’ll settle into your comfortable chair for a day of NFL Football. Then you’ll see the crawl along the bottom of the screen. “Detroit Lions set NFL record by going 0-16″.
Sure, some of you will point at the Tampa Bay Bucs who went 0-15 but keep in mind that they were an expansion team. The Detroit Lions have been in the League forever. The only NON-Expansion team to have NEVER played in a Super Bowl. We now have the label of being the EPITOME of SUCK!
Does it really matter?
Of course it doesn’t matter. The Lions are playing the New Orleans Saints this Sunday and their reward for winning or losing is the exact same. Neither team will be advancing to the Playoffs. In fact, I can argue that the Lions take more away from this season than the New Orleans Saints or the Green Bay Packers.
First, they have finally relieved Matt Millen of his duties so he can go on doing exactly what he did while he was GM of the Lions….NOTHING! Secondly, the Lions will have the first overall pick in the draft and Matt Millen will not be there to draft a wide receiver. Thirdly, there is no way EVER that Rod Marinelli retains his job. Even after saying…”How could it get any worse?” Rod is gone and will not be heard from again. Maybe he and Monte Clark, Steve Mariucci and Wayne Fontes will have time to play some golf this summer.
Face it…the Raiders, Chiefs, Bengals, Rams and Lions are all terrible football teams. Winning one of their final two games will not make me feel better nor will it save their season. It will simply mean that their opponent cared less about the game than I do. May I remind you that my Detroit Lions were the best team in the NFL for the Pre-Season going 4-0 while only giving up 3 defensive touchdowns. May I remind you that the Lions have FIVE (5) of the top 94 draft choices? This is no exercise in Futility.
Just wait until NEXT YEAR!!!!
